# Canadian DIY hair care and GTA consultation research Prepared October 13, 2026, using the client date and America/Toronto timezone. This is a purposive sample of 24 salon and barber websites, 13 manufacturer brands and Health Canada, covering service menus, consumer directions and photographic references. It is not an exhaustive survey, a sales ranking or proof of local demand. Local consultation planning now focuses on the Greater Toronto Area; other Canadian and international salons broaden the service and texture coverage. ## Findings and product opportunity Build around goals people can maintain at home: cleanse and condition, define natural texture, style an existing bob or crop, create volume or waves, put hair up, and maintain colour or cosmetic condition. Offer consultation for a new precision cut, major colour change, bleaching, correction, perms, relaxers, smoothing services and installed extensions. This routing is an editorial feasibility assessment, not a claim that nobody can perform these tasks themselves. Owning a tool or chemical does not establish skill, compatibility or suitability. The strongest reusable structure is **goal + hair profile + experience + owned items → suitable routine, verified items and exact instructions, or consultation**. Haven distinguishes fades, pixies/bobs and longer layered cuts; Fox & Jane distinguishes maintenance from transformation cuts. Curl Ambassadors explicitly separates a wash/condition/style appointment from a cut. These support separate “style my current cut” and “create a new cut” journeys. [Haven](https://havensalon.ca/haircuts/), [Fox & Jane](https://foxandjanesalon.com/brooklyn/menu/), [Curl Ambassadors](https://curlambassadors.ca/). For current inspiration, L’Oréal Professionnel’s article dated August 25, 2026 names bobs, volume, pixies, bangs, layers, pulled-back styles, centre parts and natural curls. Treat these as brand editorial trend signals, not independently measured Canadian popularity. A contemporary-looking launch can feature a side-part bob, layered blowout, textured crop, airy pixie, defined curls, coily shape, twists and low bun. Gender is optional browsing language; suitability follows hair and goal. [Official trend article](https://www.lorealprofessionnel.co.uk/hair-mag-trendy-hairstyles). Texture coverage must reflect actual stylist scope. June & Flora publishes 2A–3B curl service scope, while Curlology explicitly lists high-density 4C services and styling coaching. Do not infer all-texture expertise from the word “curly” or from a generated image. Book against verified capabilities. [June & Flora](https://www.juneandflora.com/curlyhair), [Curlology](https://www.curlologybymarilyn.com/services). ## Mainstream and repeat purchase candidates The priorities below are hypotheses for this shop. Manufacturer routines and repeated salon categories establish use cases, not reorder intervals, profitable demand or universal benefit. No category is assigned a guaranteed “best seller” label. | Proposed priority | Category | Routine evidence and fit | Repeat purchase hypothesis and test | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Core | Shampoo and rinse-out conditioner | Curl Ambassadors and LUS connect cleansing, conditioning and styling; weight and slip should suit strand thickness, density, dryness and treatment history | Broad replenishment candidate. Track repeat orders by exact variant and first-order cohort; ask actual wash frequency and remaining quantity | | Core | Leave-in detangler or conditioner | LUS offers texture-specific routines; Curl Ambassadors lists leave-ins | Useful for detangling and dryness, but do not automatically add to an already adequate routine. Validate perceived ease and repeat purchase | | Core | Gel, mousse/foam, cream and paste | Ouidad provides damp-hair gel directions; PATTERN describes cream for twists and braid-outs; American Crew describes matte hold; Living Proof offers texturizing foam | Multiple profiles require a small choice set, not one universal styler. Track finish preference, returns, residue complaints and reorder by profile | | Core for heat users | Heat protectant | Redken gives an explicit heat-protection claim and best-fit profiles | Replenishable only when customer heat-styles; use verified application instructions. Never interpret the claimed protection ceiling as a recommended tool temperature | | Selective | Conditioning masks and consumer repair treatments | OLAPLEX and K18 publish materially different sequences | Need-led recurring care, not default stacking of expensive treatments. Validate benefit, instructions comprehension and depletion | | Selective | Finishing oil/serum, dry shampoo, colour maintenance | Moroccanoil offers a Light version for fine/light-coloured hair; colour and gloss maintenance occur across salon menus | Useful add-ons for a specific goal. Pigmented care needs colour compatibility; dry shampoo is a refresh option, not an instruction to avoid washing | | Later, verified only | Refill pouches and larger sizes | AG documents 1 L shampoo/conditioner refill pouches; LUS exposes litre options | Offer after a successful small-size trial. Refill availability, bottle compatibility, price per unit and Canadian fulfilment need SKU-level verification | | Durable complement | Brushes, combs, clips, diffusers, dryers, irons, clippers | Dyson and Wahl publish consumer guidance | Usually a first-purchase or replacement opportunity. Do not treat durable tools as monthly repeat consumables; accessories and maintenance may recur independently | Source support: [LUS tutorials](https://loveurcurls.ca/pages/lus-how-to-videos), [Ouidad gel](https://www.ouidad.com/products/advanced-climate-control-heat-and-humidity-gel), [PATTERN cream](https://patternbeauty.com/products/styling-cream), [American Crew Fiber](https://www.americancrew.com/products/fiber), [Living Proof foam](https://www.livingproof.com/products/full-texturizing-foam), [Redken leave-in](https://www.redken.com/hair-care/acidic-color-gloss-heat-protection-leave-in-treatment.html), [AG refills](https://us.ag.care/pages/sustainability), [Moroccanoil Light](https://www.moroccanoil.com/products/Moroccanoil-Treatment-Light), [Dyson guides](https://www.dysoncanada.ca/en/hair-care/styling-guide), [Wahl guides](https://wahlusa.com/how-to/haircutting/haircuts-101). Ouidad describes its gel as a best seller and K18 labels its mask a bestseller on their own sites. Those are attributable brand claims with no inspected unit-sales denominator, geography or period; they cannot establish this shop’s popularity. Refill formats and subscription links demonstrate merchandising mechanisms, not customer willingness to subscribe here. Validate with paid conversion, repeat-order rate, contribution margin after shipping/returns, product complaints and consultation outcomes. Start with narrow goal bundles: wash-and-define (cleanser, conditioner, one selected styler); blowout (existing brush/dryer checked first, compatible heat protectant, optional volume product); short texture (one hold product, optional comb); twist set (detangling support, one setting product, optional clips); colour aftercare (compatible cleanser/conditioner, optional verified maintenance treatment). Show each item’s role and let the customer remove owned equivalents. Never make optional oil, mask or full-brand systems mandatory without product-specific justification. Replenishment should begin with an opt-in “remind me when I’m running low” setting. Ask bottle size, amount used and routine frequency; do not invent a 30/60/90-day consumption schedule. If measurement becomes available, estimate uses remaining = remaining quantity ÷ observed quantity per use, with units and uncertainty. Customer-selected dates remain editable. Subscription price, cancellation, shipping and consent must be implemented and verified before offering subscriptions. ## Feasibility and instruction boundaries Beginner means a modest routine or reversible styling task after reading the exact product label. Intermediate means coordination, sectioning, heat or a haircut-maintenance skill where a lesson may materially help. Professional recommended means precision transformations, chemical judgement or attachment work; present care categories and consultation rather than a detailed procedure. The task catalogue records these editorial ratings individually. Wahl supplies self-haircut resources, so a simple guarded clipper cut can be offered as an intermediate maintenance option with the exact model’s manual, mirrors and guard compatibility. That does not make a skin fade, pixie, bob, fringe transformation or curly reshaping a beginner kit. [Wahl first DIY cut](https://wahlusa.com/expert-advice/haircutting/what-you-need-do-your-first-diy-haircut). Afrotherapy describes a silk press as temporary heat styling rather than chemical straightening and says hair is assessed before heat. Route first-time, fragile or uncertain cases to a lesson or stylist; avoid promising duration or preserving curl pattern under any heat routine. Smoothing, relaxer and perm goals require separate professional routes. [Afrotherapy silk press](https://www.afrotherapysalon.com/silk-press/), [TONI&GUY services](https://toniandguy.com/pages/services). Health Canada identifies required cautions and irritation testing for relevant permanent/semi-permanent dyes and warns against eyebrow/eyelash use. The storefront must retain exact product warnings and direct people to the current label’s testing instructions; never replace them with one generic timing rule or treat a test as proof that all use is safe. Previous reactions or incompatible/unknown processing history trigger consultation, with healthcare advice where appropriate. [Health Canada hair dyes](https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/cosmetics/hair-dyes.html). Keep cosmetic scalp cleansing separate from diagnosing or treating scalp disease, sudden hair loss or painful/inflamed skin. Such symptoms leave the product quiz and require appropriate healthcare assessment. Salon “head spa”, “hair botox”, “detox” and “repair” marketing terms are not interchangeable product specifications or proof of medical benefit. M Prive’s menu illustrates several distinct treatment labels; map the actual formulation and permitted instructions. [M Prive](https://www.mprivesalon.com/services). ## Product examples as attribute benchmarks These products are reference examples, not selected stock, partners or an objective comparative ranking. Country formulation, exact version and seller authenticity remain to verify. | Reference | Documented distinction | Catalogue implication | | --- | --- | --- | | American Crew Fiber | High hold, low shine; damp or dry hair application | Store hold and finish independently. A short textured look need not buy a glossy pomade. [Instructions](https://www.americancrew.com/products/fiber) | | PATTERN Styling Cream | Rich cream; twist-outs, braid-outs and Bantu knots; brand says denser/coarser/drier curls may benefit | Do not assign rich cream automatically to fine waves. Ingredient and fragrance preferences must be checked. [Product](https://patternbeauty.com/products/styling-cream) | | Ouidad Climate Control Gel | Sectioned damp-hair application; air dry or diffuser | Show the matching technique and weight/hold alternatives; brand’s optional cream is not universally required. [Product](https://www.ouidad.com/products/advanced-climate-control-heat-and-humidity-gel) | | Moroccanoil Treatment Light | Fine or light-coloured hair; mids/ends, towel-dried or dry finishing | Oil/serum fit depends on weight and application area. Do not infer a heat-protection claim from shine alone. [Product](https://www.moroccanoil.com/products/Moroccanoil-Treatment-Light) | | Redken Acidic Color Gloss heat-protection leave-in | Brand lists colour-treated and dull virgin hair and a heat-protection claim | Distinguish leave-in thermal protection from pigmented toner or a salon gloss. [Product](https://www.redken.com/hair-care/acidic-color-gloss-heat-protection-leave-in-treatment.html) | | K18 consumer leave-in mask | Shampoo without conditioning first; towel dry; apply, wait four minutes, leave in; brand gives an initial wash sequence | Sequence belongs to this exact consumer treatment. It is not a universal mask sequence or permission for chemical damage. [Product](https://www.k18hair.com/products/leave-in-molecular-repair-hair-mask-50-ml) | | OLAPLEX No.3PLUS | Current official guide describes replacement of No.3 and a damp-hair pre-shampoo treatment with up-to-three-minute timing | Version-lock instructions. Older No.3 guidance must not be applied to new No.3PLUS inventory, or vice versa. [Current guide](https://olaplex.com/blogs/news/your-guide-to-olaplex-no-3) | | Dyson consumer styling guides | Blowout, crop, natural curls, twist-out and coily stretching tutorials use particular attachments | Techniques are model-dependent; a Dyson attachment is not presumed universal or essential. [Canada guide](https://www.dysoncanada.ca/en/hair-care/styling-guide) | | LUS Canadian tutorial library | Separate wavy, curly, kinky-coily and refresh sections | Offer texture-specific learning links and verify the selected formula. Brand-country page is not supplier-shipping proof. [Tutorials](https://loveurcurls.ca/pages/lus-how-to-videos) | ## Supplier readiness The JSON catalogue contains task requirements, category specifications and an empty mapping template. A legitimate supplier item becomes eligible only after exact SKU/variant, consumer/professional scope, compatibility, current instructions, Canadian shipping, current CAD price and stock are verified. Keep supplier stock separate from salon stock. Every eligible mapping must carry evidence URLs and checked timestamps. Images need independent reuse permission. Use explicit states: unverified, verified, incompatible, needs consultation, unavailable, stale. Unknown is not compatible. A shampoo SKU does not fill a heat-protection gap because its title contains “repair”. A routine can have adequate owned items even if no product sale occurs. Consultation can inspect labelled owned products and teach technique without promising that unknown or unsuitable products will be used. ## GTA consultation and prototype integration Suggested services are a routine review, curl-definition lesson, blowout/tool lesson, short-style lesson and change-of-cut/colour consultation. Prices and duration are owner decisions, not researched quotations. At-home help requires confirmed service area, travel fee, workspace requirements and eligible staff; do not promise GTA-wide mobile coverage from the prototype. Running With Scissors provides evidence that a mobile salon model exists in Halifax, not that any named GTA salon or the fictional business offers it. [Mobile example](https://www.halifaxhair.ca/services). Preserve the fictional four stylists and independent chair/staff expansion. Do not infer staff skills from names, gender or illustrative pictures. Keep CAD, customer-selected deposit/full payment and booking resource rules in the owning prototype. This research does not verify Stripe/Rubare integration or hosting. MMG/Rubare hosting remains deferred. No selected supplier, live payment, purchase or deployment is created here.
